The Health Promotion Seminar Series is a collaborative effort between the de Souza Institute, the Community Health Nurses Initiatives Group (CHNIG) and the Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC). The seminars offer an opportunity for professional development to nurses working in all domains of practice; community or acute care. Topics are focused on current issues, and provide a means for knowledge transfer, discussion, and resources to apply to
The monthly seminars are free of charge and open to all nurses. They are typically held on the third Thursday of the month from 12-1pm EST. Past presentations were very successful and covered the topics of Smoking Cessation, the Aging at Home Strategy, Chronic Disease Prevention, Cultural Safety, Primary Health Care, Political Action. 1. Review the basic pain terminology
2. Gain understanding of pain anatomy and physiology
3. Articulate approaches to comprehensive assessment of cancer pain and associated symptoms along the cancer continuum
4. Apply evidence-informed pharmacological approaches to manage cancer pain
5. Demonstrate effective communication techniques and strategies for pain management with patients, families, and other health professionals

Contribution of Public Health Nursing in School Setting"
Schools are a key setting for
PHNs to provide public health programs and services and work collaboratively
with others committed to comprehensive school health. The paper describes the
critical issues in school health and articulates a scope of practice for public
health nurses (PHNs) working within the school setting.

To advance the role of nursing in reducing health inequalities, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) in partnership with the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) conducted an analysis of public policy and programming focusing on the determinants of health and health outcomes that are effective in achieving the healthiest populations. July 30, 2013 - Leadership Competencies for Public Health Practice in Canada Project
The Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC) in partnership with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) and the Manitoba Public Health Managers Network (MPHMN) received funding from Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to develop a set of leadership competencies for use by public health professionals across the country. Patricia Roy, RN, has spent over 40 years of her nursing career working with and advocating for those who do not have a voice or have been silenced by the conditions of their lives, and ultimately has been at the front lines of change. CHNC releases new Canadian Community Health Nursing Professional Practice Model graphic to accompany the Canadian Community Health Nursing Professional Practice Model and Standards of Practice Document (Revised March 2011)
This video, produced by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit in Cornwall (ON) in association with Canadian Public Health Association, Canadian Coalition for Public Health in the 21st Century and the Canadian Network of Public Health Associations , is an advocacy tool to increase awareness among politicians, decision-makers and the public about the importance of investing in public health.
April 15, 2013 - CHNC 2013 Capacity Building Seed Grant Recipients
The Membership Committee on behalf of Community Health Nurses of Canada are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2013 Capacity Building Seed Grant Funding.
The memberhip committee received a number of excellent applications and the seed grant funding was shared between two excellent proposals that met all the grant funding requirements. The successful recipients for the 2013 are:
The Community Health Nursing Certification Guidebook was created as an additional resource to help candidates prepare for the Canadian Nurses Association Community Health Nursing Certification exam. The 5th edition of the Guide is aligned with the new certification exam revised in 2012.
The Guide is available to CHNC Members free of charge and can be accessed by signing in to the Members section and click on the Members Only/Forum link.
